Tire Recalls

TIRE RECALLS LINKS

Tire recalls are made based on a wide variety of problems and defects in tires, such as:

  • partial tread separation
  • tread chunking
  • tread chunkout
  • belt edge separation
  • tire bead failure
  • zipper failure
  • multi-piece wheel explosions
  • failing to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety standards

Tires from China

Tires that were manufactured or processed in China have been the subject of massive tire recalls in recent years, adding to the list of Chinese-made products whose safety has been called into question — toys, toothpaste, food items, children's products, and others. The quality control systems in China are not as stringently monitored as they are in the U.S., and imported tires may not be safe.

Tire Recalls in the U.S.

However, many tire recalls have targeted American-made tires, from both obscure and well-known tire companies (e.g., Firestone, Cooper, Dunlop and BF Goodrich). Millions of tires designed for use in private and commercial vehicles have been recalled over the past two decades. For example, in April 2008 alone, the following tire recalls were made, as listed on a site sponsored by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA):

  • Bridgestone/Firestone North America Tire (BFNT): 143 Bridgestone V-Steel G-Traction 24R21 truck tires
  • Nokian Tyres: Load Range E tires
  • Hercules Tires: Load Range E tires
  • Pro Comp: Load Range E tires
  • Pirelli Tire: size LT 235/80 R 17 Load Range E
  • Del-Nat: Load Range E tires
